CHARLOTTE — More than 700 Catholics from across the Diocese of Charlotte turned out for Catholic Family Day at Carowinds Sunday as part of a year-long celebration of the diocese’s 50th anniversary.

The day began with Mass at Harmony Theater offered by Bishop Peter Jugis, who also mingled with parishioners and seminarians before attendees headed to the park to enjoy the rides, water slides and games. As a teen in the 1970s, Bishop Jugis worked for two summers as a groundskeeper at Carowinds.

Catholic Famiy Day at Carowinds continued with an all-you-can-eat buffet lunch.
