SALISBURY — Bishop Michael Martin celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe Thursday with 200 elementary and middle school students at Sacred Heart School in Salisbury.
The bishop said Mass and participated in a rose-petal procession featuring an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe and students wearing homemade “tilmas” (or cloaks) in honor of St. Juan Diego, the Mexican peasant who received an image of Our Lady almost 500 years ago.
The bishop also visited classrooms, where he helped students make rain for a science project, and took time to swing with students.
“We were a little starstruck to have the bishop visit with us,” said Principal Erin Brinkley, “but we were all so appreciative of his genuine nature and his willingness get in and have fun and give good advice and just spend time with us.”
